Objectives

What a correct return should capture.

  • Report the W-2 box 1 wages on Form 1040 line 1a. The reported tips are already inside box 1, so they are part of wages and part of AGI.
  • Identify the qualified tips from the W-2 (the reported tip amount) for the new No Tax on Tips deduction.
  • Confirm the taxpayer qualifies: a customarily-tipped occupation on the IRS list, an employer that is not a Specified Service Trade or Business, and modified AGI under the single phase-out threshold.
  • Claim the No Tax on Tips deduction on new Schedule 1-A, limited to the lesser of the qualified tips or the annual cap.
  • Take the single standard deduction, which applies in addition to the tips deduction, to reach taxable income.
  • Figure the tax from the Tax Table, then compare it to the federal withholding in box 2 for the refund. Note that Florida has no state income tax.
